OLED Treatment For Acne, Skin Cancer

OLEDs boast great resolutions and energy efficiency, but they could also be used to treat skin cancer and acne. A U.K. team is developing wearable OLED stickers that'll cure your skin ailments on the go.

Many skin cancers are currently treated by a combo of light and drugs (called photodynamic therapy), but current light sources are large and the therapy requires lengthy hospital visits. Lumicure Ltd. Is looking to use OLEDs in the treatment instead.

The OLEDs would be attached to sticking plaster that can be placed on the diseased skin. Not only will it be more comfortable, the patient could possibly do the therapy from home. Lumicure says it'll have the device out by Q4 of 2009, and that they're working on something similar to treat acne as well.
Source Gizmodo - [Printed Electronics via OLED info]

What a brilliant innovation. An Organic Light Emitting Diode, fixed in place by a skin patch that can be worn by the patient, while he or she works, sleeps and plays. The day may soon come when these devices will be dispensed OTC from selected outlets, to ease the burden of the millions of people suffering from skin disorders, such as acne and skin cancer.

Advanced Skin Disorder Treatment Uses Stem Cells

In a new study, scientists have found that stem cells from bone marrow may act as a novel therapeutic option to treat a disease called epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a disorder characterized by extraordinarily fragile skin.

The debilitating condition is caused by significantly reduced collagen type 7 protein (col7) production, a key component of the anchoring fibrils that connect the cutaneous membranes to the dermis of the skin and mucosal tissues in the gastrointestinal tract.

Currently, there's no cure for the disease, and palliative care includes complex bandaging, surgical removal of damaged tissue, and nutritional support.

"We have been looking into stem cells as viable treatment options for correction of conditions such as epidermolysis bullosa, because they can produce extracellular matrix proteins. In this condition, the skin, the largest organ in the body, can significantly benefit from a renewable source of healthy cells that can help improve the connection between the dermis and epidermis and strengthen the skin against everyday stresses," said Jakub Tolar, MD, PhD, of the University of Minnesota and lead author of the study.

For the study, the researchers worked with a mouse model of RDEB-infused bone marrow cells to determine if they would increase production of the col7 protein and formation of anchoring fibrils, and improve survival in the mouse recipients.

So, they used bone marrow cells enriched for hematopoietic (stem cells that can develop into most blood cell types) and progenitor cells to increase the concentration of cells with the capacity to produce col7.

Researchers are continually exploring new horizons in order to rid mankind of incurable skin disorders, such as acne, and epidermolysis bullosa. Stem cells from bone marrow is yet another tool that is currently being developed by modern science, which may produce a permanent cure for these serious types of skin diseases.

Tanda, a leading home-use light-based skincare technology is now the first FDA cleared at-home light therapy device for the treatment of mild to moderate inflammatory acne available in the U.S. without a prescription. This FDA marketing clearance allows the sale of this revolutionary new skincare treatment over-the-counter to Acne sufferers. Tanda offers consumers across the United States a safe and effective over-the-counter home-use device to clear existing acne blemishes and help prevent further breakouts.

Acne Treatment Lamp Trials

Sagentia, the world leading product development, technology consulting and IP exploitation company based in Cambridge, UK, has deployed its full concept through to manufacture service to ensure the rapid and successful development of a new photodynamic treatment (PDT) lamp.

Norwegian-based pharmaceutical company Photocure had identified the need for a new, large-area PDT lamp that could be used in combination with its proprietary pharmaceutical VisonacTM for the treatment of moderate to severe acne.

With time to market and cost of development as key issues, the company recognised that a highly focused development programme would be required. The aim was to achieve a production-ready device for planned Phase III clinical trials starting in the first half of 2009.

Photocure chose Sagentia as its development partner due to the company’s track record in the medical device sector, its ability to offer a rapid concept to manufacture development programme and the assurance that Sagentia could offer through its accreditation to ISO 13485 (the medical device quality management standard).

The fully developed lamp – known as Aktilite® CL512 – comprises two light panels with 512 light emitting diodes that deliver a controlled dose of red light. The panels can be adjusted to treat either the face or flat areas such as the chest or back. A mobile trolley stand and articulating support arm are used to position the lamp over the treatment area.

Based on Photocure’s IP and product requirements, Sagentia undertook a complete concept to manufacture product development programme comprising analytical modelling to identify the best technical concept; all mechanical, electronics, software and optical development work; validation and optimisation of advanced design concepts with clinical stakeholders; the establishment of an extended production supply chain, notably in the Far East; approvals testing for EU and US regulatory requirements; and finally transfer to production using Photocure’s existing European sub-contract manufacturer.

Photocure’s brief called for a large area PDT lamp that could provide uniform illumination of the whole face. To meet this need, Sagentia developed a 3D optical model to simulate illumination across the entire face and investigate the performance of different product concepts. Sagentia’s 3D model was able to determine that full face illumination could be achieved using just two angled lamp panels rather than the three to five previously considered necessary.

At key points during the development programme, Sagentia solicited feedback from clinical / nursing professionals to ensure that user requirements were correctly identified and validated. This included one-to-one clinician interviews, focus groups to explore the range of product concepts and usability workshops to validate prototype designs.

One of the primary reasons for the rapid and successful conclusion of the project was Sagentia’s ability to manage and co-ordinate a multi-disciplinary in-house team of engineers, scientists and technologists, many of whom had direct medical device development experience. This extended from initial product conceptualisation through to the establishment of a Far East network of suppliers. Sagentia’s expertise in this area enabled the company to build a supply chain for low volume, high quality mechanical parts at 40 per cent of the cost of equivalent European items.

Kjetil Hestdal, President and CEO of Photocure, said: “The Aktilite® CL512 lamp is an essential component of the VisonacTM photodynamic therapy procedure and I am pleased that, as a result of Sagentia’s swift and successful product development programme, it is available for use in the Phase III trials.”

European technology, has produced another effective means of acne control that may benefit the millions of people, from all around the world, who suffer from this most common skin complaint.

Acne Drug Could Cause Abortions

Using the controversial acne drug Roaccutane could lead to more abortions, according to specialists. Roaccutane is used for the treatment of severe, persistent acne, but it has made headlines in recent years for its unproven links with depression and suicide. According to dermatologists, a move by health authorities to allow GPs to prescribe the heavy-duty medication will push up prescription rates and endanger patients.

Dr Stephen Shumack, secretary of the Australasian College of Dermatologists said that there was a risk that patients would not be informed of the dangers of birth abnormalities among babies born to women taking Roaccutane, forcing them to require an abortion. "This would be a very bad move indeed," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Shumack, as saying.

"The college fears that appropriate people may not be given it, inappropriate people may be given it, and the side-effects may not be managed appropriately. "And, overall, far more people will be given it, which increases the risk of pregnancies, especially if this is not properly screened for, and then there's more abortions," he added. He said that under current arrangement there had been very few pregnancy issues with the drug.

More than 140,000 prescriptions were written for Roaccutane in the past financial year but prescribing is limited to the nation's 400 dermatologists and specialist physicians. However, the Therapeutic Goods Administration's national drugs and poisons scheduling committee said that it would consider a proposal to extend prescribing rights to include 18,000 GPs.

Roaccutane manufacturer Roche, and several firms that sell the drug generically, have denied making the request.

Shumack described it as "ill-conceived" and said the college would oppose it.

Source: Medindia

Isotretinoin , the active ingredient for Roaccutane, is only prescribed for extreme cases of acne, for which, it has been found to be quite effective. However, this is a dangerous drug that does have some nasty side effects, and a patient should consider the possibility of unwanted consequences occurring, before deciding to take the medication.

Provided that patients are thoroughly screened by a medical professional before this medication is prescribed, then the chances of a forced abortion should not exist

Enhanced Cosmetic Procedures

New York — To satisfy the public's quest for younger-looking skin, the marketplace for cosmetic procedures has expanded dramatically over the years, with little signs of slowing down. From new facial fillers that produce longer-lasting results to at-home treatments that can temporarily remove unwanted hair, the average consumer now has many choices when it comes to improving their appearance. However, this trend also has created an influx of unqualified practitioners lacking the training and expertise of dermatologists who understand the science behind these cosmetic procedures and their effects on the skin. This can put patient safety at risk.

Speaking today at the American Academy of Dermatology’s academy (Academy), dermatologist Ranella J. Hirsch, MD, FAAD, clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, discussed how new technology and products entering the growing market of cosmetic procedures are enhancing dermatologists’ ability to fine-tune treatments and the pros and cons of at-home cosmetic procedures.

Dermatologists Select Safest Solutions
Advances in the use of fillers, lasers and botulinum rejuvenation are allowing dermatologists to better refine treatments based on each patient’s specific cosmetic needs. Dr. Hirsch credits the influx of new technologies and products in these areas as the reason behind the expanded treatment options for patients.

“The biggest news in cosmetic procedures is the number of new products in the pipeline that allow us to truly customize and refine treatments for the individual patient,” said Dr. Hirsch. “Dermatologists are now in a position to be able to offer patients very specific solutions to each of their skin concerns.”

For example, the technology behind lasers and other light sources - which is the cornerstone of many skin rejuvenation procedures - is continually evolving. Fractional resurfacing is one of the newer laser technologies that gives dermatologists the option to safely treat patients with more extensive skin damage. Source:
AAD

Constant research and new technology, is responsible for the great advancements that are being made in overcoming skin disorders such as, acne, skin cancer and aging.

Also, there are many DIY kits available from drug stores that enable people to conveniently improve their appearance before they step outdoors. These kits have been tested and proven safe before being released to the public.

If you have persistent skin problems that do not respond to over the counter methods, then you should consult a dermatologist.

Cambodian Condom Lubricant Cures Acne

A condom lubricant designed for sex workers and gay men has become a popular acne cure among female Cambodians, women in the capital and local media said Thursday.

Number One Plus, a water-based lubricant produced by health organisation Population Services International (PSI), is an excellent cure for acne, 29-year-old vendor Tep Kemyoeurn told AFP. "After I used it for three days, all of my acne dried up and went away," she said. "Many people believe in it," she added.

Khen Vanny, 29, from Phnom Penh, told AFP that women of all ages have taken to using the lubricant to get rid of spots. "It is very effective. Some people don't believe in it, but people who do really get a good result," she said, adding: "My youngest sister and my aunt use it too."

Another woman told Khmer-language Kampuchea Thmey newspaper that she had used many kinds of medicine to treat acne, but none had worked. "After that my friends, who work at garment factories in Phnom Penh, advised me to apply the lubricant from Number One Plus condoms on my face every night," she told the paper. "And just within three to four nights, the acne on my face gradually and then totally disappeared," she added.

A vendor near a factory in the coastal city of Sihanoukville told the newspaper that she sold packets of Number One Plus lubricant for 500 riels (12 cents) to many women every day.

Arcutis Pharma's Acanya Gel

Redwood City, California. Arcutis Pharmaceuticals, a privately held specialty pharmaceutical organization focusing in medical dermatology, announced that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the new drug application (NDA) of Acanya Gel (clindamycin phosphate 1.2% and benzoyl peroxide 2.5%) for the once-daily treatment of acne vulgaris in patients 12 years and older.

Evaluated in clinical studies enrolling over 3,200 subjects with moderate to severe acne, Acanya Gel is the only FDA-approved fixed combination antibiotic and benzoyl peroxide medication for once daily treatment of both non-inflammatory and inflammatory lesions of acne.

"We are very pleased to announce the FDA's approval of Acanya Gel," said Bhaskar Chaudhuri, president and chief executive officer of Arcutis Pharmaceuticals. "Formulated in an aqueous-based, alcohol-free gel, Acanya was optimized to provide enhanced bioavailability of benzoyl peroxide, creating an effective and well tolerated product for patients. In pivotal clinical trials, Acanya Gel demonstrated synergistic efficacy superior to the vehicle gel and either clindamycin or benzoyl peroxide alone, while demonstrating excellent tolerability and no reports of application site dryness," said Dr Chaudhuri.

The following application site adverse reactions occurred in less than 0.2% of patients treated with Acanya Gel: application site pain (0.1%); application site exfoliation (0.1%); and application site irritation (0.1%). Acne vulgaris is a common skin disorder that affects about 85 percent of people at some point in their lives. In the past year, more than five million patients with acne in the US sought treatment from a physician, resulting in over 17 million prescriptions filled, according to data from Verispan and IMS. Acanya Gel is protected by two US patents and has pending patent applications.

Arcutis is a new medical dermatology-focused, specialty pharmaceutical organization created with the goal of developing improved prescription medications that patients love to use.

Expensive Skin Care Regimens Are Washed Up

Nov 23, 2008 (Chicago Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX)
In tough economic times, looking your best is still important -- maybe more than ever. Like it or not, studies show that attractive people earn more money and hold greater positions of power.

But when people are worried about keeping jobs and making mortgage payments, spending $120 for a few ounces of moisturizer is off the table.

So how can the average woman afford to keep up her beauty regimen? Dr. Debra Luftman and Dr. Eva Ritvo, authors of "The Beauty Prescription" (McGraw-Hill, $24.95), say most women need only three basic skin care products. They offered other tips for how women can pamper themselves -- sometimes without spending a penny.

1. Out of the gate, you are at least 20 percent more beautiful than you think you are. Women tend to underestimate their beauty by 20 percent, Luftman says.

2. Many drugstore brands are as effective as department store brands, where you're often paying for packaging, fragrance and so-called "elegant" formulations.

3. When it comes to skin care, keep it simple (KIS). Three or four daily skin care products -- an exfoliative cleanser, a sunscreen and a therapeutic night cream -- should do it. Need some suggestions? For cleansers, Luftman likes Cera Ve Cleanser, Aqua Glycolic Cleanser by Merz, Therapeutix Clarity Cleanser and Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash. For sunscreens, she suggests Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunblock Lotion, Dove Energy Glow Facial Brightening and Olay Complete Defense Daily Moisturizer. For night creams, she likes Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream, Neutrogena Healthy Skin Visibly Even Night Concentrate and Eucerin CoQ10 Anti-Wrinkle Cream.

4. Look in your kitchen for free beauty products. Green tea bags soaked and frozen make great eye depuffers. For youthful lips, mix granular sugar with cherry Jell-O and do a light scrub of your lips.

5. Exercise is free. Endorphins are released and your skin glows, muscle tone improves and attitude is enhanced.
Source: Chicago Tribune

During tough economic times, one has to carefully budget, but that does not mean that proper skin care management should be neglected.

There are many natural products on hand around the home, in the pantry, laundry, or growing in the garden that can, with the proper application, help to keep the skin toned and healthy. Natural herbs and lotions are available and affordable.

Superior Skin Rejuvenation

New York, November 19, 2008 -- Dr. Lisa Zdinak, oculoplastic surgeon and laser skin care specialist, is pleased to introduce the revolutionary SilkPeelTM DermalInfusion technology to her Manhattan clientele. SilkPeelTM is renowned as the most advanced exfoliation and rejuvenation treatment available today.

The unique diamond-tipped treatment heads set SilkPeelTM worlds apart from standard microdermabrasion procedures that rely upon abrasive particles that unevenly sandblast the skin. SilkPeelTM treatments go beyond simply exfoliating the skin surface. While the spinning medical grade diamonds polish the skin surface, customized vitamin solutions penetrate deeply into the skin to deliver their therapeutic effects: clarifying solutions heal acne-prone skin; hydrating solutions moisturize and soothe dry, flakey skin; brightening solutions lighten and fade dark spots and correct uneven skintones; and, antioxidant solutions bathe sun-damaged skin cells in nourishing vitamins and nutrients.

The solutions do not just sit on top of the skin like a traditional lotion or cream - instead the patented SilkPeelTM handpiece deeply delivers the vitamins, antioxidants and other therapeutic ingredients into the skin where they are most needed, the stratum corneum layer. Clinical studies have shown that SilkPeelTM provides even abrasion across the treatment area and rapid hydration deep to the underlying cells. SilkPeelTM DermalInfusionTM offers true skin rejuvenation with thorough exfoliation and targeted treatment to improve a host of skin conditions.

The procedure can be performed in a twenty minute office appointment with none of the residual "grittiness" of traditional microdermabrasion, making it a more pleasant and comfortable experience. The SilkPeelTM machine is the only device of its kind capable of running a disinfection cycle, making it the safest and most hygienic system on the market.

Source: Yahoo News

This skin care procedure may be a major breakthrough for the many millions of people that carry disfiguring facial scars from acne, sun damage and burns.

Acne strikes more than eighty percent of the population at some stage and, as yet, there is no absolute cure for the disorder. Many sufferers, who were affected by acne during their teenage years, have resulting facial scars that cause them embarrassment, which has a significant impact, on their social and professional life styles.

Researchers, are continually working towards developing new techniques that will help acne sufferers, to rid themselves of the disorder. Developers, are continually producing new skin care products, and occasionally a new technique emerges that brings acne sufferers just one step closer, to getting rid of the disease and being able to completely repair their skin.

Acne is a common skin disorder that affects about three quarters of the population. Nearly everybody will suffer from an acne outbreak of some sort, at some time during their life time. It is extremely difficult to find a topical preparation that will discretely cover unsightly pimples, so that they become unnoticeable, without causing further harm to an already inflamed skin condition.

Many acne sufferers, who are reluctant to appear in public because of ugly blemishes on their face, will find comfort in this award winning beauty aid, and be able to mix socially or professionally once again, without feeling self conscious about their looks.

As luck would have it, the approaches to Magapit bridge were clear and afforded us the opportunity of pausing on the bridge to take a couple of photos. We are heading west and our next stop will be Alacapan.

After crossing the bridge, we drove to the top of the small range that bounds the western shore of the Cagayan River, and passed through the village of Bangag. There are coconut and banana plantations on the side of the hill, and we notice that the air is clean and crisp as we begin the descent to the low country. Unfortunately there is no elevated view of the river behind us so we focus on the road ahead, which is paved and carries only a moderate amount of traffic, at this time...

As our jeepney rounds the bend, I am presented with a splendid view of the Magapit Bridge spanning the Cagayan River. The village of Magapit is situated on the eastern shore of the Cagayan River at the junction of two major arterial roads, which link the northern municipalities with the south and the northeastern municipalities with the northwest.

Originally a gift from Japan, the Magapit suspension bridge was the first of it's type to be erected in Asia. The bridge was constructed during the nineteen seventies and is most important, as it is the only bridge spanning the Cagayan river in the far north of Cagayan Province. It provides a more direct route from the northwestern municipalities to the capital city of Tuguegarao, as well as a road link to the northern port city of Aparri..
