Costa Rica is situated on the Central American Isthmus, which is sandwiched between the Caribbean Seas and the Pacific Ocean. It is 10° north of the Equator, has a coastline of 212km on the Caribbean coast and 1016km on the Pacific coast. From Nicaragua, Costa Rica extends south-southeast for about 420km to Panama and is about 240km wide.
